Mitrovica itself is divided between the northern part of the city, mostly inhabited by Serbs, and the southern part, where live Albanians. Since the annexation of the Crimea by Russia in March 2014, Serbia compares the Russian claims in Crimea to those they have in Kosovo. Serbia is the only state in Europe to have a free trade agreement with Moscow, it will have to abandon to join the European Union.
